V&A Waterfront

V&A Waterfront’s holistic energy efficiency interventions have helped them achieve a reduction in total consumption of 26% from 2008 till 2015. They are currently saving almost R10 million per year now, with energy efficiency interventions that have typically not exceeded 4 years payback period, except for the PV which they have now installed. Over the past 7 years they have saved about 78 Gigawatts.

Projects that helped to achieve these were:

  • Installation of lighting controls, energy efficient lighting and repositioning/relocation of light fittings, utilisation of natural lighting
  • Upgraded air-conditioning (25% electricity savings) and building management system
  • Sea water cooling system for air conditioner cooling tower
  • Installation of new chillers and variable speed drives on pumps and motors
  • Installation of meters and development of credible metering and billing systems
  • Replacement of sewage pumps
  • Replaced 120 hand towel dispensers with hand dryers – saving R800K per annum and diverting another 42 tons of waste from landfill
  • Inclusion of targets in staff performance contracts
  • Workshops to educate tenants and introduce them to suppliers and V&A initiatives
  • Installation of solar panels on 8 rooftops producing 1093kWp
